How to choose a gift they’ll actually keep

1 min read

The best gifts aren’t the most expensive ones. They’re the ones that make someone feel noticed. Before you scroll through another list of “ideas for everyone”, ask yourself these five questions.

1. What do their evenings look like?

Gifts that fit into a routine get used every day. The reader wants warmth and good light. The bath person wants a candle and something that smells like a holiday. The one who is always out walking wants something cosy for their hands and neck.

2. What do they never buy for themselves?

Most people happily buy what they need and skip what they’d love. A beautiful version of an everyday thing (a wallet, a flask, a jewellery box) feels like a treat precisely because they would never “waste” money on it.

3. Is there a story you share?

A snow globe from the trip you took together. A print of the place where you met. The gift becomes a reminder of you, and that is why it stays on the shelf for years.

4. Can you make it a set?

One small item can look lonely. Two or three things that belong together, such as a candle, a scarf and a note, look like a moment you planned. That’s what makes a gift feel planned.

5. What will you write on the card?

Decide on the message before you pick the gift. If you can finish the sentence “This made me think of you because…”, you’ve found it.
